Nothing brings in the New Year like a fresh cocktail. Enjoy this festive cocktail from Bon Appetitie while our chef and food scientist explains just why it tastes so good.
Cocktail Analysis: The cocktail is a hard cider spritz, playing up some of the flavors of the holiday season and providing some interesting flavor pairings. The cocktail brings in apple cider, both hard and “soft,” pairing it with Rye Whiskey, Aperol, and lemon juice.
Ryes, other whiskies, and bourbons are often characterized by tree fruit notes like pear and apple, making for a complimentary pairing with the cider, while the lemon juice provides a contrasting acidity to the sweetness of the apples. The Aperol brings a lot to the drink with it’s bitter, citrus and floral characteristics. It’s bitterness balances the sweetness of the cocktail, the citrus notes pair with the fresh lemon juice, and the floral notes augment the floral character of the cider. The hard cider and added club soda bring a texture contrast into play – the carbonation both adds interest and allows for a better flavor release as the bubbles pop in your mouth.
To make the cocktail, we’ve mixed the hard and soft cider together, and added the Rye, Aperol, and lemon juice to the pitcher. We’re now going to pour this mixture over ice, and top with club soda. Finish with an apple slice garnish and enjoy. You can also try this drink with different citrus and tree fruit notes, bringing pear, orange, and/or grapefruit flavors to the table.

Earl Grey-Bourbon Punch: Bergamot in the tea pairs nicely with the lemon/rosemary/orange. The fermented tea leaves blend with brown fruit/caramelized/tobacco notes in bourbon. Hint: Choose a sweet aromatic-forward bourbon, rather than a smoky one.
